Kulima director participating in meeting on measuring adaptation

Dr Katharine Vincent is in Bonn for a side meeting to the UNFCCC intersessional discussions on measuring progress on adaptation. The event is organised by IDRC and the African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES) and follows on from a side event at COP 23 held on the same theme, and co-convened by IDRC and AGNES with McGill University, University of Notre Dam du Lac and the Asian Institute of Technology. The aim of the meeting to take stock of the various initiatives for measuring progress on adaptation, and identify particular needs, taking into account the ongoing negotiations on the Paris Agreement and how to transparently measure adaptation progress. Other organisations represented at the meeting include the Global Centre of Excellent on Climate Adaptation, UNEP DTU, UN Environment, UN Climate Change, CCAFS, GIZIIED and the governments of Kenya, Uganda, Botswana and Ghana. 

  

Kulima director in Windhoek for vulnerability and adaptation assessment of Namibia’s Third National Communication

SwwakopmundDr Katharine Vincent is in Windhoek this week to run a brief training course on climate change, in conjunction with the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, and then facilitate a working session of the vulnerability and assessment task team from the group compiling the Third National Communication to the UNFCCC. The process of vulnerability and adaptation assessment has been designed to build the capacity of Namibian nationals and feed into the related process of National Adaptation Plan creation. V&A task team members were identified at an inception workshop in March, whilst the training component will be attended by a variety of government staff from different departments.

Kulima director continues trip to Malawi to wrap up ADAPT-PLAN project proposal

Malawi roadDr Katharine Vincent continues her trip to Malawi this week to hold a stakeholder workshop to finalise the project document for the ADAPT-PLAN project, on integrating adaptation into decision-making, which has been accepted at concept stage for funding by the GEF under the Least Developed Countries Fund.  This finalisation follows several rounds of consultations; at the district and national-level; and also presentation to (and endorsement by) the Climate Change Technical Committee.  The project sets up the institutional framework to encourage integration of adaptation into District Development Plans in 3 districts (Nkhata Bay, Ntcheu and Zomba) and 3 national departments (Agriculture, Water and Forestry) through the use of finance linked to identification and attainment of appropriate adaptation indicators.

Kulima directors publish paper on indicators and loss and damage in Geography Compass

Geography CompassA paper by Dr Katharine Vincent and Ms Tracy Cull has been published in the January 2014 edition of the online Wiley journal, Geography Compass.  Using indicators to assess climate change vulnerabilities: Are there lessons to learn for emerging loss and damage debates? investigates whether there is a role to play for the growing and evolving literature on vulnerability indicators to assess the risk of loss and damage, which has become one of the pressing debates within the international policy framework around climate change.
