Tracy Cull grew up in Durban and Port Elizabeth before graduating from the University of Natal with bachelors and honours degrees in Geographical and Environmental Science. After a short time working in the USA, UK, and Israel, she moved to Johannesburg in 1996, and then to Hilton (KwaZulu Natal) at the end of 2010.
During her 14 years in Johannesburg, she spent 12 years at the University of the Witwatersrand as a senior tutor in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies. During this time she taught a wide range of courses to undergraduates, including human geography, contemporary development issues, geomorphology, mapwork, and research techniques. She acted as first year coordinator, with responsibility for academic and personal counselling for up to 140 students per year. Latterly she was also involved in teaching methodology and practice to trainee teachers undertaking the PostGraduate Certificate in Education.
Whilst at Wits Tracy took a particular interest in the pedagogy around training and education, and coordinated the Geography department’s foundation (and later academic development) courses, which aimed to make higher education accessible to students who came from disadvantaged education backgrounds, but who had been identified as having the potential to succeed with extra help. She also played a key role in curriculum design and development, both within the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, and representing this school on various faculties within the university.
Tracy left Wits in 2008, assuming the part-time role of training coordinator at the Regional Hunger and Vulnerability Programme, a UKAID and AusAID-funded regional programme for the SADC region that promotes the use of social protection as a mechanism for reducing vulnerability to hunger and food insecurity. In this role she was responsible for setting up a flexible, modular-based training curriculum embedded in a variety of institutions around southern Africa to cater mainly for the needs of vulnerability practitioners.
Concurrent with her role at RHVP, and since that project ended in November 2010, Tracy has been involved in a number of other projects for Kulima Integrated Development Solutions, relating to climate change adaptation and social protection and social policy in Africa. She has worked in South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya and Ghana.
Tracy’s research interests span a wide range of human geographical and development issues. She is an experienced trainer who is confident in the use of a variety of pedagogical tools, and an effective communicator with strong facilitation skills who is accustomed to working with diversity. She is an excellent leader, with proved ability to turn ideas into action, and her unsurpassed organisation skills have led to her appointment as Project Manager at Kulima.
Tracy enjoys spending time with her family, which includes 6-year olds twins and a variety of pets (she is known for being a fan of pigs, as well as the more traditional dogs and cats). In her spare time she devours books and is a particular fan of historical novels. In the holidays you will likely find her hiking the coast of the Eastern Cape or in the bush.
