Kulima is proud to be part of a new project : CLARE Behavioural Adaptation for Water Security and Inclusion (BASIN). BASIN is funded by UK aid from the UK government and by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) as part of the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) research programme. It was launched at Africa Climate Week in 2023.

BASIN is a transdisciplinary partnership that brings together four universities, three NGOs and a knowledge broker. It is led by the London School of Economics and Political Science through the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science, WaterAid and Water Witness, with the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology, Center for Water Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Futures (Tanzania), Shahidi wa Maji (Tanzania), University of Malawi, United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, and Kulima Integrated Development Solutions.

Over the next three years, BASIN will apply insights from behavioural and psychological sciences to adaptation behaviours and practices around water at multiple levels (individual, organisational and political). This will be done with the aim of improving the effectiveness and equity of adaptation. Research activities will include testing insights into targeting weather and climate information to enable adaptation action through case studies where NGO partners are addressing cases of critical climate–water challenges in Burkina Faso, Malawi and Tanzania, providing the basis for upscaling insights in the Sahel, Ethiopia and Zambia.
