Last week, Katharine Vincent and Willem Colenbrander undertook a number of activities in Zambia for the Behavioural Adaptation for Water Security and Inclusion (BASIN) project, part of the CLARE Programme. The BASIN project is led by the London School of Economics and Political Science through the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Department of Psychological and Behavioural ScienceWaterAid and Water Witness, with a range of partners that includes Kulima Integrated Development Solutions.

In Zambia, Kulima is leading a case study that investigates behaviours and actions in response to the receipt of weather information, and also looks at motivations for volunteering. This is done in conjunction with Satellite Disaster Management Committee members in Kanyama, a part of Lusaka.

Last week introductory climate change training was run at the request of the Satellite Disaster Management Committee members. It was attended by 105 people, comprising mainly local community members (including many with disabilities), but also some local officials.

BASIN data collection activities were also conducted. This comprised 3 focus group discussions to map behavioural journeys in response to receiving weather information; 17 surveys on risk communication; and two interviews looking at motivations for volunteering. Analysis is now underway to contributes insights on behaviours in response to weather information and motivations for volunteering.
